The white carnation symbolizes the late husband Prince Bernhard of the late queen Juliana of the Netherlands. He always wore a white carnation in his buttonhole. Dutch war veterans have adopt this habbit.
Red carnations are the symbol of labour movements in many places of the world.

The revolution in Portugal was called Carnation Revolution, when the military insurgents put these flowers in their gun-barrels at the Lisbon flower market.
In my own country, Germany, the carnation is rather a flower found on graveyards and at funerals. It is a symbol of Christ's passion, since its petals resemble a nail. In old German, the flower was also called "näglein" (little nail), a name which is still present in an old but common lullaby.

Carnations in the US are one of the most simple, everyday flowers. They are sold at all grocery stores, every convenience stores! I have never thought of them as an interesting flower- so its great to hear all these other interpretations

In old Turkish movies, people wear a red carnation on their chest to be recognized when they're are going to meet someone for a blind date, that person usually being their pen pal with whom they have been in love with :)

In Portugal the red carnation means freedom from dictatorship since it was the flower that the soldiers were offered to put in their guns... the revolution took place without a single gun shot, 36 years ago... since then, every 25th of April, we proudly display red carnations.

Hy,
just found your blog today. Beautiful!! Nice mushrooms, hope they are not poisonous :-)
In our country (Slovenija, EU) red carnation is a symbol for love, frienship and slovenian people and also symbol for workers rights, people who fighted in world war ipd...

Such interesting comments about carnations. The ones that grow in pots (smaller flowers , dark red) are/were typical of farmhouses in the North western part of Slovenia. Old people said that pot of carnations had to be placed near a heap of manure - that made them grow and bloom. Another interesting thing. Carnation in "nagelj" in our language - it must come from old German, as Sigrid says that the word was "naglein". I didn't know it meant anything - how interesting.
